Advocacy for languages is critical in every country. As a new member of the Washington-based Joint National Committee on Languages and the National Council for Languages and International Studies (JNCL-NCLIS) CALEC took part in Language Advocacy Day 2022. 

CALEC would like to express our deepest condolences to the family, friends and colleagues of John Carlino. A formidable advocate for languages and education, John inspired many of us at CALEC and we will keep him in our thoughts as we keep on promoting multilingualism, empowering multilingual families, and fostering cross-cultural understanding.

The Deputies adopted a recommendation to member States on the importance of plurilingual and intercultural education for democratic culture and took note of its explanatory memorandum. 

Bilingualism should be prioritized as it can help cognitive ability, improve academic scores, and also open more opportunities for second language speakers.
